Eric Thomas On Control What You Can Control

In life, some things happen to you that dictate where you begin. You can’t control where you are born, who your parents are, or if it’s going to rain or not. You get the picture.

But, no matter where you begin there is always a way to find stability and peace. There is this excellent book Man’s Search for Meaning written by Viktor Frankl that chronics his experience in Auschwitz concentration camp. Frankl would identify a purpose in life he could feel good about, and then, imagined himself having that outcome.

The meaning of life is found in the little things that happen to us daily. You can find meaning even in suffering and sorrow. Though you may not realize it, there is always someone looking out for you – a friend, a family member, or even God, who would expect not to be disappointed. Understand that by disappointing them, you are only letting yourself down.

Your future is determined not solely by your surroundings, no matter how harsh they are, but also by your freedom of choice.

Consistently working to develop your craft will help you to build your confidence. Something that every great man in the history of humanity has in common is the struggle they had endured before they became successful. You should expect and embrace the strain as an inevitable part of your journey. It becomes easier when you understand and accept roadblocks as part of the process. Success doesn’t come overnight; it’s the process of putting in the work time and again.

Connect yourself with others who are also pursuing similar goals. The people you associate with will determine your expectations. If you surround yourself with people that have very high expectations, it will feel natural to you to keep that pace.

As you become empowered, you will empower those around you. Getting back to Man’s Search for Meaning, Frankl concludes that “love is the ultimate and the highest goal to which man can aspire. The salvation of man is through love and in love.” We are wired to help each other and to reciprocate whenever anyone helps us.

Believe in who you were born to be! It’s hope that will make you wake-up at 5-AM fully energised and ready to hit the day with everything you have. When you lose hope you are condemned to be a prisoner of your surroundings and live a life of mediocrity. For this reason, it’s paramount to have hope in the future and to believe in yourself.

You must take advantage of every opportunity to uplift those around you. The fastest way to break out from your surroundings is by helping others in whatever ways you can. As I said before, we are wired to reciprocate, and people will tend to support you for helping them. Even if that doesn’t happen in such an obvious way, don’t worry, the universe has its own way of giving back to the ones that give to others. Give without reservation and life will reward you for it!
